Library Mashups for the Virtual Campus (Contributed Paper)

This presentation was given by  Adriene Lim, Linda Absher, and Kerry Wu from Portland State University. Their campus implemented a new student portal and they thought that this would be a great way to extend resources to their students. They decided to create a current awareness service (Topic Watch) using RSS feeds to aggregate topic based content in the portal. They included news stories, podcasts, new acquisitions, del.icio.us, federated searching, and You Tube (eventually removed because of copyright concerns).

The pages are built using AJAX and CSS. They use the Programmable Web site as a resource for finding APIs to help create mashups.

Challenges to implementation included: personalization, filtering, licensed databases that don't offer RSS feeds, copyright issues, and non Roman characters.
